and Announcements
Creatures great and small joined together the day before April vacation to celebrate Earth Day with an All Species Parade. Children, parents and teachers from Peopleplace and Children’s House paraded from CHMS down Elm Street as far as French & Brawn and back up to the school. The children were costumed as a variety of flora and fauna with Children’s House kindergartners and elementary students wearing papier mache masks they had designed and constructed themselves. The younger children sported species headbands and designed a “We love all species banner” to carry in the parade. The first All-Species Parade was held in San Francisco in 1978. It has since grown into an international “All Species Project” with educational programs for teachers. The opportunity for children to research a different species helps them to take a larger view of the earth as a whole and think about the interdependence between species and the importance of diversity to the planet.

Our parade was featured in photo spreads in both VillageSoup and the Camden Herald. To see photos from the Herald, visit http://courierpub.mycapture.com/.

Photos of the parade by Holly Anderson of VillageSoup can be viewed at http://villagesoup.exposuremanager.com/g/events.

Thank you to all the parents who accompanied the parade, to Peopleplace for its participation, and to the Camden Police Department for graciously managing traffic to help keep the marchers safe.

Our Practical Life Auction on May 2nd was one of our most successful due to the efforts of many volunteers as well as generous donations from friends, family and businesses, not to mention some very lively bidding! The Auction netted over $20,000. Thank you to Lauria O’Connell for taking on the role of auction chair with such great energy and efficiency. Thank you also to Dawn Smith-Cote and Dana Cote, Katrina Janes, Molly Fedarko, Pete and Kristi Kalajian, Kerry Sabanty, Ken & Amy Russell, Tia Anderson, Anneli Rocknak, Alex Lawrence, David O’Connell, Martha Bracy, Mish Morgenstern, Barrett & Lynne Brown, Annie & Peter Edwards, Alex & Kate Cohen, Josh Moore, Susan Akers, the CHMS Faculty, Zoot Coffeehouse, Small Wonder Gallery and Plants Unlimited. Thank you to all of the families and businesses who contributed items to the auction – what a spectacular offering from a community full of hidden, and not so hidden, talents. Special thanks to auctioneer Rosey Gerry and his wonderful crew who all offer their time, talents and senses of humor at no charge. And thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to a lively and successful evening. Please, if we left any names off this list, let us know, so they can be thanked as well.

The first duty of an education is to stir up life, but leave it free to develop.
